　　结构要点：

　　1) 主干是It is the reason why when…，all we can do is articulate…,and not grasp…

　　2) 其中why是定语从句，修饰reason

　　3) when引导的状语从句对应的主句是all we can do isarticulate…, and not grasp…。

　　汉译逻辑要点：

　　1) Itis also the reason why…是整个句子的主干部分，后面why引导的是一个定语从句修饰名词the reason。可以直接翻译为：这也是为什么…的原因。

　　2) whenwe try to describe music with words中withwords是介词短语做状语，修饰describe music，需要翻译到其前面。这个部分可以翻译为：在我们试图用语言来描述音乐时。

　　3) allwe can do is + 动词原形的做法。一般认为前面all we can do既然有动词do，所以后面的动词articulate就习惯用原形了，其实是all we can do is (to) articulate…。其次，all we can do是主语，在结构上主语中心词是all，后面we can do是省略that的定语从句修饰all，这个结构具有强调意味，翻译为“我们所能做的只是…”，或者“我们只能”。

　　4) andnot grasp music itself是与上文articulate并列的表语部分，它们都是省略了to的不定式。可以直接翻译为：而不能理解音乐本身。或者引申为“而不能理解音乐的本质”都可以接受。

　　结构要点：

　　1) 第一个并列句的主干he was…, and…

　　2) 第二个并列句的主干是I find courage…，an essential quality是宾语补足语

　　3) of his works既要修饰the understanding，还要修饰the performance。

　　汉译逻辑要点：

　　1) by all accounts是一个习惯用法，意思是“据说，大家都说，大家普遍认为”。

　　2) andI find courage an essential quality for the understanding是and连接的第二个并列句。其中有一个比较容易出错的单词是quality，它当可数名词用，是“特征，品质”等意思，而不是“质量”的意思。所以，这个部分可以直接翻译为：我发现勇敢是对于理解的一个关键的特征。这个译文不通顺，原因在于“勇敢是对于理解(什么)的一个关键特征”。正好下文有of his works，这样可以清楚的判断，这里的of his works要修饰the understanding，还要修饰the performance。所以，译文可以调整为：勇敢这一特征是理解他作品的关键。

　　3) letalone the performance, of his works。如前所述，ofhis works，既修饰the understanding，也修饰the performance，所以the performance of his works可以翻译为“对他的作品的演奏”。let alone是“更不说，更别提”的意思。如果这个部分直接翻译为“更不说对其作品的演奏”，感觉不完整，可以补充完整“更不说是演奏其作品的关键”。

　　人们普遍认为他是个思想自由的人，是个勇敢无畏的人，我发现勇敢这一特征是理解他作品的关键，更不说是演奏其作品的关键。
